World-renowned breast cancer specialist to help Edgewood College volleyball raise awareness

Madison, Wis. – Dr. Richard R. Love, president of the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation (IBCRF), will help the Edgewood College volleyball program kick off its annual “Dig for Life” campaign by serving as guest coach on Tuesday, Oct. 5, when the Eagles will host Alverno College. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

“Most of our lives have been touched by someone who has been affected by breast cancer and the Lake Michigan Conference volleyball teams are gathering donations during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said head volleyball coach Cindy Hanson. “The Edgewood College volleyball team is privileged to welcome the participation of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Carla Love.”

In 2003-04, Edgewood College student-athletes and coaches raised nearly $1,500 for cancer research through such fundraisers as “Dig for Life,” a fundraising program initiated by members of the Lake Michigan Conference, with all proceeds benefiting the breast cancer research and education at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Love was the past president of the American Society of Preventive Oncology and editor of the Manual of Clinical Oncology, the most widely used book on cancer medicine in the world. He is currently a professor of Medicine and Family Practice at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

An avid college volleyball fan, Dr. Love was welcomed to the Edgewood College campus through the efforts of assistant volleyball coach Amy Tolentino. This Tuesday Dr. Love will be taking a short break away from his research, which currently includes the initial phases of a five-year clinical trial. Site visits and study opening processes are already underway at 12 major foreign hospitals, including hospitals in: China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Morocco, and Nigeria.
