ROCKFORD, Ill. (May 9, 2008) – Carl Peterson pitched a complete game, allowing just one run while J.D. Rotzoll was a perfect five-for-five at the plate helping No. 4 seed Concordia Chicago win the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament opener 9-1 over top seed Benedictine. The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth and four in the ninth, pounding out 18 hits.
With two outs in the top of the third, Concordia Chicago’s J.D. Rotzoll singled driving in Zach Bickel to break the scoreless tie. The Cougars added three runs in the fifth, off of five hits to extend the lead to 4-0. Both teams traded runs in the eighth inning, with the Eagles stranding three runners on the bases. In the ninth the Cougars tacked on four insurance runs to take the 9-1 lead. The Eagles were hitless until a Kenny Burdi single to lead off the fourth inning.
Concordia Chicago’s J.D. Rotzoll was five-for-five at the plate with two RBIs to lead the team. Zach Tropp was three-for-five for the Cougars as the team amassed 18 hits, one shy of a season high set against MSOE on May 4. Carl Peterson (7-2) pitched his first complete game of the season, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Benedictine’s Jake Thompson (4-4) absorbs the loss, pitching seven and two-thirds innings, allowing 13 hits and four earned runs.
With the win, Concordia Chicago improves to 29-11 and awaits the winner of the Marian-Rockford game while Benedictine falls to 25-16 and will face an elimination game later today.
