MADISON, Wis. – It was an historic night at the Todd Wehr Edgedome on Wednesday as Megan Scheele became Edgewood College’s all-time leading scorer, guiding the Eagles past Northern Athletics Conference foe Rockford College, 68-46, and into the win column for the fifth straight time.

After a made free throw and her 16th point of the evening at the 7:50 mark of the second half, Edgewood College (9-5, 7-1 NAC) embraced its new leading scorer with cheers and flash bulbs. Even more special, the Eagles’ former record holder, Deb Boomsma (Cupery), was on hand to congratulate Scheele as she moved atop the record books. Boomsma (‘91) had held the long-standing mark for 18 years, collecting 1,854 points over her 107-game career.

Scheele, amidst all the tension, scored just five points in a turnover-infested first half that saw both teams combine for 27 miscues. Despite the sloppy play, the Eagles were able to build some momentum heading into the break after a three-pointer by Brianna Droessler and a bucket by Scheele to close out the half with a 24-18 lead. In the second half, needing just 11 points to capture the coveted spot in Edgewood College history, Scheele was able to turn it on.

In the face of a tenacious Rockford defense, the senior scored the first four points of the second half and finished the game 8-of-15 from the field, after just a 2-of-7 first half performance, to finish with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds.

For nearly a 10-minute stretch in the second half, the Eagles embarked on a 21-5 run started by Eagle freshman Ashley Averkamp. It was Averkamp who took the pressure off Scheele when she found it difficult to step away from the defense, and finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks to compliment her fellow forward.

Edgewood College scored 40 of its 68 points in the paint and turned 28 Rockford turnovers into 29 Eagle points. Amber Hemp matched her career-high eight assists from the night before in the win and Droessler stepped up big in the absence of Susan Paskey, who was out with an injury, by turning in nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals in 30 minutes off the bench.

Rockford (4-11, 2-6 NAC) was led by Kim Nielsen’s 10 points and five rebounds on 4-of-10 shooting. As a team, the Regents shot just 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the field and 6-of-13 from the free throw line.

The win gave the Eagles their ninth in ten tries and pushed their conference winning streak to seven straight victories. They’ll look to make it eight in a row on Saturday when they travel to Dominican for a 2:00 p.m. tip off.
