MADISON, Wis. - Former two-sport standout Mandie Armstrong and one of the first Edgewood College teams to reach a national tournament, were inducted into the Edgewood College Athletics Hall of Fame at a banquet and ceremony help on Saturday at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Armstrong and the 1994-95 women’s tennis team are the first inductees since 2007.

Armstrong still owns nearly every Edgewood College volleyball record a front row player could possibly own. An amazing athlete, Armstrong still holds Eagle volleyball records for kills (1,659), kills per game/set (3.55), blocks (530) and blocks per game/set (1.13). She was a three-time first team All-Lake Michigan Conference player and won the LMC Player of the Year award in 1998. Her volleyball teams won the 1996 Lake Michigan Conference titles and two LMC Tournament titles (1995 and 1996). In basketball, Armstrong became the fourth Eagle in history score over 1,200 points and still ranks seventh all-time in scoring. She was the most dominant rebounder of her era pulling down 662 career boards. As she did in volleyball, she earned three straight first team All-Lake Michigan Conference awards from 1997-99.

The members of the 1994-95 women’s tennis team were the core of players who won six Lake Michigan Conference titles in a seven year period from 1991-97, including four straight titles from 1994-97. The 1994-95 team, coached by Hall of Fame member Stu Schaefer, posted a 9-2 record, and claimed five titles at the Lake Michigan Conference Championships. Liz Dobbs, Frauke Sander and Jill Wiench each won singles titles while partners Dobbs-Katy (Kneeland) Clancy and Sander-Stephany (Schill) Hartman won doubles titles. Those players and teammates Sarah (Townsend) Davis and Dawn (Roderick) Goltz then competed in the 1995 NAIA National Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma, becoming the first Edgewood College women’s team to reach an NAIA or NCAA National Championship event.

The Edgewood College Athletics Hall of Fame holds an induction ceremony every three years as part of their annual senior recognition banquet. Over 70 guests attended this year’s event.
